With the big event in Washington today, being the most digitally streamed inauguration in history you’d think everyone with a device would have been streaming today. But not me.
USTREAM, the live broadcasting site, was streaming the event today, but their app only allows a WiFi connection , most likely due to the developer restrictions set by Apple.
Without an available WiFi connection I was limited to viewing my Twitter network, where all my jailbroken friends were watching the #inaug09 using their VOIPover3G apps to mask the 3G connection as WiFi.
I’ll give Apple a break on the WiFi restrictions it puts on streaming apps, but it’s been six months since the launch of the 3G and I’m still waiting for basic device necessities like Copy & Paste, which by the way is possible on jailbroken phones using apps like Clippy.
The way in which Apple runs the app store is enough to drive enthusiasts mad. I’ve been waiting for Qik for an eternity and I’m beginning to wonder if it will even happen. Once again my jailbreak crew are enjoying the latest and greatest buzzed must have app. Why would Apple want jailbreak on the cutting edge?? I want to be the bleeding edge.
Apple, I’m being tormented by my peer’s. The reasons I had for not jailbreaking are being dwarfed by my geek requirements. The list grows increasingly high and it gets harder for me to sleep, as I think of the things I could be doing. I appreciate your insistence to shepherd the whole experience but your ability to compete will become maligned as you make your biggest cheerleaders (Hello”?…I’m @iPhonegirl) wait until your competitors force your hand.
So there it is. The comments below should reflect the community’s thoughts. I say if you give me at least these two things, I’ll stay loyal. Qik and Copy & Paste.
I’m feeling bad about talking so stern to my boyfriend Apple, but some girls just get pushed too far.

If you have to do it, do it. Your personal needs are more important than the abusive relationship with your hardware.
btw I don’t understand 75% of what you wrote because I have a Blackberry.
I’m still not totally convinced of utilities like Clippy for copy and paste. I’d much rather see Apple do their own thing with it and let people stop worrying about how to tackle the problem. Of course, the Jailbreak community might still want to have their own way of doing it if Apple mucks it up.
As far as Jailbreaking is concerned, I sat on the fence for all of a month after getting my iPhone back in April. Honestly, all it took for me was the ability to use Summerboard (precursor to Winterboard) to customize the background and icons. Since then, I’ve discovered Snapture, NemusSync, and a handful of other apps that have been very useful. I’ll admit, the need to jailbreak is becoming less necessary, but I’d still encourage you to do it. The worst that will happen is that you’ll end up with all of your favs in the App Store eventually, upgrade to the new firmware, and lose your Jailbroken configuration which you’ll no longer think about.
Hey Brodie!
As I sent to you on twitter, The question is, “Why NOT Jailbreak your iphone?” You lose nothing, but gain all sorts of awesome!
You’ve already listed a few of the “awesome” things Jailbreaking gives you… so I won’t reiterate your list.
Just do it, you won’t regret it. (and its easy as pie anyway!)
I agree with Nicholas, there is no reason not to. It’s perfectly safe and you lose nothing.
Even if something gores wrong, you do a restore and you’re fine.
My iPhone 3G is jailbroken, and I love QIK and backgrounder which lets you run apps in the background. Perfect for streaming radio apps and IM.
Using Quickpwn your path to JB couldn’t be any easier. Back a backup of the phone in itunes. (in case) and follow the instructions on Quickpwn and in less then 15mins your JB and ready to enjoy Clippy(btw is BLOODY awesome!! Cut and paste is outstanding) of course the option to use things like voipover3g is a big bonus as well. But lets not forget things like backgrounder where it allows you to run apps in the background so your could run things like twitterfon. The list is unlimited.
You can use Fring on 3G with VoIPover3G! Great, now I’m contemplating jailbreaking
Agree with the above. As it stands now, Jailbreaking is no risk. Gone are the horror stories of bricking your phone and lengthy command line jailbreak process. Plug in your phone, click a couple of buttons and your phone is exactly the same as it was but with access to a wider range of apps that Apple can’t sensor.
I’m an Apple fan with no doubt, but I won’t stick up for the way the Appstore is run. It’s inconsistent, contradictary and ran pretty badly in my opinion. And it limits what the developers can do, and what the iPhone is really capable of. In an ever increasing open source world, Apple, in my opinion is keeping too closed with the Appstore.
Jailbreak… You know you want to!
@Chris Gilbert Yes Chris you can use voip apps like Fring while on 3G using VOIPover3G to trick apps into thinking your on WiFI. Sweet!

Hi Brodie,
I’m glad I found you on Twitter. Yes, I’ve been debating this too. I think that I’m going to do it! Thanks for the post!
Quickpwn makes jailbreaking so painless. If, by some strange turn of events, something goes wrong, it’s so easy to restore. The real question is … Why the heck doesn’t everyone jailbreak?!
Just recently (last couple of weeks or so) I too have been contemplating Jailbreaking my 3G iPhone.
It just seems to make so much sense to jailbreak, everything seems so much better!
It also seems much less risky now too, well compared to how it used to seem.
Everything seems to be quite positive to be honest.
